More Than a Meal: A Taiwanese Family’s Heart Served with Every Dish

More than just a restaurant, Seasons Taiwanese Eatery is a story passed down through generations, a delicious blend of a mother’s passion and a son’s heartfelt devotion. It began in August 1983, with a woman named Chen Xiulan – our Mom. Leaving her home in eastern Taiwan, her name “Xiulan” (蘭) would eventually blossom into the heart of our first venture, initially known as “Season’s Ice and Eatery.” Her journey was fueled by a mother’s love, sparked by the simple joy of her children relishing good food and her own deep love for cooking. She yearned to share the authentic tastes of her homeland, a culinary legacy rooted in the principle of “only eating clean.”

Helping her every step of the way was my Dad, who deeply understood the longing for those familiar flavors. “It took a long time to reach Taiwan,” he would often say, his voice carrying a hint of nostalgia, “so I tried my best to learn to cook that food myself, and I wanted to introduce it to others so they could enjoy it too.” He became her steadfast partner, supporting her dream of sharing Taiwan through its cuisine.

For Mom, this wasn’t just about feeding appetites; it was about 传承 (chuánchéng) – passing down a cultural heritage. She hoped that future generations would taste the essence of their grandparents’ cooking, understanding not just the flavors, but also the respect for ingredients, the “every grain is hard-earned”ethos of their upbringing. Food, she believed, was a powerful storyteller, a tangible link to their roots. Each dish held a piece of her journey, the origins of the ingredients, the very soul of Taiwan. Sharing these flavors was an invitation to discover a culture, a land, and a history.

In 1994, “Season’s Ice and Eatery” opened its doors, becoming a cherished part of the Chinatown Cultural Plaza in Honolulu for over three decades. It was a place where the sweet scent of Taiwanese treats and the savory aroma of home-style cooking created a comforting embrace for the community.

Then came a pivotal moment. Six years ago, Brian(me, their son), a successful financial advisor, faced the prospect of Seasons closing as Mom and Dad considered retirement. But Seasons was more than a business to him; it was home, deeply rooted with childhood memories and the faces of familiar regulars. The thought of its end struck a deep chord. Without hesitation, he stepped forward, ready to carry the torch of their legacy.

Brian’s vision was to honor the past while embracing the future. He embarked on a culinary exploration through China and Taiwan, immersing himself in traditional techniques and the vibrant energy of street food. Inspired, he returned with a desire to reimagine the family restaurant. “Season’s Ice and Eatery” evolved into Seasons Taiwanese Eatery, a modern haven for Taiwanese street food, built upon the foundation of quality and authenticity established by Mom and Dad.

The response was overwhelming. Loyal customers returned, new friends were welcomed, and lines began to form. The original space, filled with years of love and delicious aromas, could no longer contain the growing popularity. The journey to open a new location was challenging, a four-year endeavor marked by unforeseen obstacles and the global pandemic. Yet, Brian persevered, driven by the same love and dedication that had started it all.

Today, Brian’s dishes – from the crispy popcorn chicken to the comforting braised pig feet and the expertly prepared intestines – tell a story of heritage, love, and the courage to honor tradition while embracing innovation.

If you ever find yourself in Oahu’s Chinatown, please, come and taste the incredible food born from this enduring legacy. Shake Brian’s hand, acknowledge the beautiful journey, and become a part of a story that continues to unfold, one delicious plate at a time.
